Tanzania doesn't have one perfect safari moment — it has many. Dry months bring clarity and concentrated wildlife. Green months bring renewal, solitude, and better value. This guide breaks each season down across three regions so you can match timing to what matters most to you.

Dry Season

June — October

Clear skies, concentrated wildlife at remaining water sources, and optimal light. This is peak safari — reliable viewing and the migration at its most dramatic.

Dry season conditions
Game ViewingExcellent — animals concentrated at water; open sight lines
MigrationJuly–Sep: Mara River crossings in northern Serengeti
WeatherDry and stable; warm days, cool mornings
CrowdsHighest Jul–Sep; June and October noticeably quieter
Wildebeest crossing the Mara River

Serengeti

The migration reaches its most visible phase. Grumeti crossings in June–July give way to Mara crossings Aug–Oct — predators patrol both zones relentlessly.

  • River crossing spectacles
  • Peak predator activity
  • Best photographic light and visibility
Lion's Paw Camp on the Ngorongoro Crater rim

Ngorongoro

High wildlife density inside the caldera year-round, but dry months offer clearest visibility. Big Five sightings are consistent and the crater floor is easily navigated.

  • Reliable Big Five encounters
  • Clear skies and long sight lines
  • Varied light across the day
Elephant Springs Camp in Tarangire

Tarangire

Elephants converge on the Tarangire River in enormous herds. Fewer visitors than the Serengeti, ancient baobabs frame the landscape, and the atmosphere is unhurried.

  • Massive elephant gatherings
  • Iconic baobab scenery
  • Quieter, more intimate safaris
Green Season

November — May

Fewer people, fresher landscapes, calving drama, and exceptional value. Showers are typically brief — mornings usually clear. This is safari without the crowds.

Green season conditions
Game ViewingWildlife more dispersed; calving and predator action prominent
MigrationNov–Dec: herds move south; Jan–Feb: calving peak
WeatherLush vegetation; passing showers; dramatic skies
CrowdsSignificantly reduced — often private sightings
Green Serengeti plains

Serengeti

The migration returns south for calving (Jan–Feb) — predators follow. Later months bring green plains, excellent birdlife, and near-total solitude on game drives.

  • Calving season drama
  • Vibrant birdlife
  • Far fewer vehicles
Lion's Paw Camp terrace overlooking Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro

Flamingos appear on the crater lake, fresh grazing covers the floor. Big Five remain constant. Mist and renewed growth give the rim an atmospheric quality.

  • Flamingo concentrations
  • Greener, moodier scenery
  • Extended sightings without interruption
Elephant Springs aerial view in green Tarangire

Tarangire

Wildflowers bloom, swamps revive, migratory birds arrive in force. Elephant and antelope birthing adds new generations. The park's inherent quiet deepens further.

  • Floral bloom and wetland renewal
  • Outstanding birding
  • Maximum tranquillity
